Scores of people were allegedly injured on Tuesday, 17 June, 2014, when supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and its main rival, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, clashed in
Iwo, Osun State, western Nigeria. According to reports, crisis began when some suspected supporters of PDP allegedly attacked a bus carrying market women on their way to the re-election campaign ground of Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
It was gathered that some supporters of APC later traced the leaders of the attackers to their hideout where more clashes ensued, leaving many people wounded. According to those that witnessed the fight, one of the wounded was on danger list at an undisclosed hospital.
Reports said that Governor Aregbesola was sad at the development when briefed and ordered security operatives to ensure adequate security of lives and property on all campaign grounds. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officers PPRO, Mrs Folashade Odoro, said she was yet to be briefed on the development
Meanwhile, while addressing APC supporters at the campaign ground, Aregbesola implored them not to be intimidated by the presence of soldiers and police officers at polling centres during the 9 August governorship election in the state. The governor also stressed that the soldiers had no right to send electorates away during elections.
According to him “If soldiers attempt to shoot you, do not run away from them. They can’t kill all of you. In fact, any soldier that kills will be killed.”
Aregbesola also encouraged his supporters not to leave the polling centres until the election results were announced.
